Economic Activity 

The basic economic activities of Lexington include manufacturing, retailing, meat processing, aquaculture, alfalfa dehydrating, cattle feeding, farming, ranching, and ethanol production. Tourism, enhanced by Lexington’s close proximity to Interstate 80 and the adjacent recreation areas at Johnson Lake, contributes to the area’s economic growth. There are more than 375 retail and 21 wholesale firms serving the needs of the community.

Location/Transportation 

Lexington, the county seat of Dawson County, is located in south central Nebraska in the Platte River Valley. Transportation needs are served by U.S. Highways 30 and 283. Interstate 80 abuts the city to the south and the Union Pacific Railroad dissects the city with three main line rails connected to a nation-wide network. Coupled with Nebraska’s central location, many area firms take advantage of national shipping opportunities. 

Airport

Jim Kelly Field, named for long-time Lexington businessman and aviation enthusiast James Kelly, is located west of Lexington on Highway 30. The airport averages 25 operations per day and boasts an administration/terminal building, aircraft maintenance shop, and aircraft storage hangers.
