Mission: to maintain, train and equip combat-ready Naval forces capable of winning wars, deterring aggression and maintaining freedom of the seas.

Motto: “Semper Fortis” (Latin for “Forever Strong”
Founded: October 13, 1775, originally called the Continental Navy. It became the U.S. Navy on March 27, 1794.
The United States Navy (USN) is the maritime (ocean-going) service branch of the United States Armed Forces. It is the third largest branch. The USN is the largest and most powerful navy in the world, with the estimated tonnage of its active battle fleet alone exceeding the next 13 navies combined.

The modern United States Navy maintains a sizable global presence, with the ability to engage in forward deployments during peacetime and rapidly respond to regional crises, making it a frequent actor in American foreign and military policy.

The U.S. Navy began to research the use of aircraft at sea in the 1910s, and commissioned its first aircraft carrier
in 1922.

The Navy’s five enduring functions are: sea control, power projection, deterrence, maritime security, and sealift.
